Fujitsu to offer first 2.5in perpendicular HDDs in October

Fujitsu has been banging away at 2.5in perpendicular hard drives for some time now, and today’s announcement of the imminent release of two models is another sign that perpendicular magnetic recording (PMR) is swinging into the mainstream.

The MHW2160BH is a 160GB version that has the highest storage capacity of any 5,400rpm HDD, claims Fujitsu. The other model, the MHW2080BH, rings in at 80GB.

Fujitsu is also claiming that the BH series offers the “industry’s highest level of shock resistance and energy efficiency,” although they don’t bother to provide any evidence for this. Oh yeah, the HDDs can be flogged in the EU because they’re RoHS compliant.

No prices were announced, but Fujitsu did say it wants to sell 9 million of the PMR HDDs when they become available in October.

Yoshi’s take: Next stop: smaller.
