A survey carried out just before Golden Week (fine weather all round – no showers reported) has shown some very interesting results about Japanese attitudes to piracy.
One thousand Japanese citizens were asked about their opinions to piracy in an attempt to discover how many people partook and how they went about it.
However, the researchers seemed preoccupied with punters paying for ripped-off goods and content, rather than downloading it for free like any normal Blackbeard.
Given that, it’s not surprising that only 11 percent of people admitted to committing any form of piracy.
A full 64 percent said they didn’t even know anyone who had bought pirated content – a number that would very likely be contested by media publishers across the world.
Of those who admitted that they owned pirated goods, CDs and movies were the most popular things, while game software came surprisingly low, at 13.5 percent, despite piracy being rampant on Japan’s favorite console, the Nintendo DS.
What’s unusual, however, is the fact that 38 percent of those who own pirate goods bought them from a physical shop that sells such gear. We’re just wondering how these places survive in 2010.
