Sony is planning to build a new LCD television plant in Slovakia, the company said Wednesday. The new factory will have a capacity of 3 million sets per annum when in full operation.

The planned ¥11 billion (US$93.4 million) factory will manufacture flat-panel LCD televisions for the European market and will be built in Nitra, Slovakia. Sony currently has two TV plants in Europe: one in Barcelona, Spain, and one in Trnava, Slovakia. Sony said a key deciding factors in favor of Slovakia for the new plant was the close proximity to its existing facility in the country.

Operations at the new plant are expected to begin in September 2007. Once it is operating smoothly Sony plans to discontinue LCD TV production at the Trnava plant and shift it to the new factory. Production will continue at the Barcelona plant.
