A group of 11 academics have just lodged a protest against the Japanese government’s plans to install surveillance cameras at railway and subway stations, ostensibly “as a way to prevent terrorist attacks on public transportation,” according to the Kyodo wire service.
The government is apparently developing a system to install the cameras at ticket wickets to record images of passengers’ faces in order to “immediately check the data against a database of people the authorities link to terrorism.”
"People’s right to privacy will be infringed upon in the name of crime prevention," Kyodo quotes Yasuhiko Tajima, Sophia University professor of Information and the Media Law, as saying. Welcome to the real world, Japan.
