Apple swaps the ‘e’ in ‘education’ for an ‘i’

The eMac was the last of a venerable breed. It was the last Mac to feature a CRT, and one of the few remaining to boast a PowerPC processor (the Xserve, and soon-to-be-replaced PowerMac G5 being the others). And as of today, the last nail on its coffin is being pounded shut.

Apple has replaced the machine with a low-end iMac for the education market. The model features a 17in widescreen LCD, a 1.83GHz Intel Core Duo processor, 512MB of RAM (in 2 DIMMs), a 80GB SATA hard drive, a 24x combo drive, a built-in iSight, AirPort Extreme, and integrated GMA 950 graphics. All of that in one package for $899 (¥116,000 in Japan), including Tiger and iLife ‘06.

Compared to the next rung up on the ladder, the iMac looks pretty good. The main differences are a larger hard drive, a SuperDrive instead of the combo drive, Radeon X1600 graphics, Bluetooth, and a remote, for a difference of $300. While you can build-to-order with a larger hard drive, and the remote, the Bluetooth, SuperDrive and Radeon graphics are not options.

The iMac is available only through the Apple Store for Education, where you can also find the last remaining stock of the eMac. If you were hoping to snag one of those, better grab it now. When they’re gone, they’re gone.
