Bluedot PMP runs Linux, loves people

Japan’s Bluedot and Korea’s Digital Cube have put their heads together and come up with a rather nifty Linux-based PMP with a 30GB hard-drive and lots more goodness inside.

The BMP-1430 is due out here in Japan next week and will cost around ¥70,000 (US$610 to you). For that outlay you get that 30GB drive, a wired remote, a 4.3in touch panel with handwriting recognition, an FM tuner and USB host functionality.

Supported file types ain’t shabby either: JPG, BMP, PNG, MP3, WMA, OGG, Dolby, WAV, FLAC, MPEG-1/2/4, WMV7/8/9, XviD and (soon) DivX. Phew. Battery life runs to seven hours for vids and 10 for music, while the whole thing weighs 320g.

The real draw is in that Linux OS, which, interestingly, is being touted as a Good Thing in the marketing brochures. Seems users are encouraged to install their own apps alongside the reams of stuff already on there, such as a memo pad and a scheduler. Makes a refreshing change, eh Sony?
