E3 ‘06: PSP brings camera to party
May 11th, 2006

Over the way at the PSP stand, there’s almost as much buzz as there is around the PS3, which is mainly due to the handheld’s ability to Wi-Fi content, including game demos, to the tooled-up super-nerds who have brought their own game machines to a freakin’ game show.

Sony has cleverly made overtures to jobbing journos like us by offering all its E3 assets (a BS term for screenshots, press releases etc — they’re rarely an asset to anyone) wirelessly to PSPs, thereby giving us no excuse not to cover stuff like the PlayStation Spot you see below.

The PS Spot beams out game samples to anyone within 10 feet with their PSP Wi-Fi switch flipped up. The demos are fully playable but can’t be saved once the handheld is switched off, so no take-away fun here; still, the masses were lapping it up.

One really impressive peripheral on show today is the upcoming PSP camera. It’s behind glass at the show, but the pic gives an idea of how cool this thing is gonna be when it arrives in September. It’s currently running a game called Kira Kira (“sparkly” in Japanese, Motion Stars in the final English version) but we don’t see much sparkling going on today.
