Future screens get touchier

Sony looks like it’s finally ready to roll with its Touch Engine Module technology that it hopes will help spread the touchy, feely force-feedback love to previously insensitive screens on PDAs and similar devices. The magic lies in piezoelectric crystal strips that allow screens to respond to being prodded.

The new modules use very low -voltage motors that make for a tiny reaction movement against a finger on the panel, so you know when you’ve “clicked” or not. Lack of feedback from such panels is often cited by users as a reason for preferring old-fashioned buttons. Naturally, eliminating buttons also allows for bigger screens and/or smaller devices.

The company is sampling 3in and 4in sensors next month and wants to fit out all manner of digital devices with the technology before long.
