Horiba Itech is set to release its new shock-sensitive video recorder for use in taxis and other road-going vehicles. The Doraneko 2 consists of a windshield-mounted camera attached to a digital recorder that, when given a violent jolt, saves the previous 15 seconds of video and continues recording for another 5 seconds.
This kind of “black box” technology for cars and trucks has become quite popular in Japan, as it helps police (and employers) quickly determine who is at fault in an accident. The Doraneko 2 can be adjusted for 10 sensitivity levels, measures 110 x 80 x 38mm, and uses CompactFlash. It goes on sale today for about ¥50,000.
