Japan establishes Bot of the Year award

Does Japan love robots or what? No less an authority than the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) is establishing a Robot of the Year prize to reward firms that put bots into practical use.

Besides the grand prize, there’ll be handouts to companies that develop painting and welding bots, service bots (house scrubbers, security guards, etc.), rescue bots (we nominate The Mole — except, darn, it’s not Japanese) and bots made by small- and medium-sized venture firms. Who would bet against the brilliance of TMSUK, eh?
