Matsushita usually sticks to simple things like its Panasonic-branded MP3 players or hairdryers, so it’s something of a surprise to see the company’s hard-core arm, Matsushita Electric Works, come up with a blood-loving robot for medical use.
The “Hospi” droid is currently being deployed in facilities across Japan, starting with a medical analysis firm known as BML. Hospi grabs blood from patients — whether it leeches it directly from a vein with some sort of probe or if it is handed the claret in a jug isn’t clear — and uses laser guidance to find its way to wherever the blood is to be delivered.
Such bots usually require special markers on the floor but Hospi is bright enough to just download a map from a PC and get cracking on his own.
