Japanese bots to battle in space

Japanese technology is often described as futuristic, and now here’s proof.

In an Alice in Wonderland-type move that actually parallels the virtual arms race in space (see NFIRE, XSS-11, SmartSat-1, etc.), those perceptive supernerds at ROBO-ONE have set up a web page announcing a robot competition in orbit on October 10, 2010. “This ROBO-ONE Space project is not a lie. It is true…” the website proclaims, rather too close for comfort, perhaps?

If you think all this sounds absurd, think again. At military and university labs all over the world, people are building so-called micro, nano and pico satellite prototypes to act as anti-satellite weapons, spy satellites and communications satellites. The Third World War might not start in the world after all, but above it.
