Japanese gov’t slams Sony on dodgy Apple PC batteries

The heat is spreading for Sony, whose dodgy batteries have injured several people and have caused Japan’s Ministry of Trade and Industry to threaten the big S with fines unless it checks a bunch of batteries inside iBooks and PowerBook G4s.

It’s starting to look like a real horror story, with news of an Apple notebook catching fire in Japan coming just after Sony issued a recall of 1.8 million batteries. METI now wants the following checked out: the A1061 battery in iBookG4 12in models ZZ338-ZZ427, 3K429-3K611 and 6C510-6C626; the A1079 battery in PowerBook G4 12in models ZZ411-ZZ427 and 3K428-3K611; and the A1078 and A1148 batteries in 3K425-3K601, 6N530-6N551 and 6N601 PowerBook G4 15in models.

METI has threatened Sony with a pathetic ¥300,000 fine unless it comes up with a report on what the cause of the trouble is and what’s to be done about it.

Anecdotally, the wife’s MacBook Pro runs like it’s drunk, and when we pick it up, it’s really, really hot on the bottom left, something she (an ardent Mac fan) has been worried about for months. It’s all starting to make sense now.

Thank you, Sony.

Yoshi’s take: BTW, ¥300,000 = $2,500. That’ll show ‘em!
