Japanese Schoolgirls on Discovery Science Channel

The Discovery Science channel has an intriguing show, currently airing in the UK, called “Japanese Schoolgirls,” which purports to serve up the latest gadget news hot from Tokyo.

The blurb on the show site rightly points out that:

“Japan is where new technology is born. Some of it grows up and heads towards the west, but the world’s biggest exporter of consumer electronics regularly keeps its most innovative technology to itself…”

…which is obviously something our millions of regular readers agree with, but have any of you actually seen the show? If so, we’d love to hear all about it.

That interest is partly motivated by a recent experience I had writing a similarly themed column for a major US technology magazine which was marred by the tiny problem that the editors simply didn’t want to know about what was really down with the kids here. It was a case of schoolgirls or nothing, leaving scores of fascinating areas untouched while the same old cliches about Japanese youth were wheeled out month after month. Let’s hope for better from Discovery.

Yoshi’s take: I share those fears — so much of what the West sees of Japan is terribly hackneyed garbage. We’ll continue to fight the good fight on your behalf.
