KDDI announces fees for number portability
August 16th, 2006

KDDI has become the first major Japanese phone company to describe just how thoroughly it’ll gouge customers when number portability becomes available here on October 24.

As expected, the carrier will give a free ride to anyone making the switch to its au or Tu-Ka service from a rival company. But all those Benedict Arnolds who abandon KDDI in favor of DoCoMo or Vodafone, er, Softbank, will get hit with a ¥2,100 fee. And don’t let the door hit you in the ass on the way out!

Yoshi’s take: DoCoMo and Softbank will undoubtedly do the same. Someone’s got to pay for those infrastructure upgrades.
