LG is planning to expand its global line-up of “full HD” high-definition LCD televisions by adding two smaller models, the company said Wednesday.
High-definition TVs fall into two basic categories: those with 768 horizontal lines and those with 1,080 horizontal lines. The latter offers a higher resolution picture and is dubbed “full HD.” Until recently the higher resolution has only been available on sets with large screens. However as technology improves and prices drop TV set makers are adding it to smaller screen models to stay competitive.
LG Electronics currently sells 47in and 55in LCD TVs with full HD resolution of 1,920 x 1,080 pixels and will add sets with 37in and 42in screens, it said.
The new full HD models will go on sale first in LG’s home market of South Korea and then appear in Europe and the U.S. in the first quarter of 2007.
Included in the line-up will be models with built-in digital video recorders. The sets will have 250GB hard-disk drives and will continuously record two hours of video for immediate time-shift playback.
