Lucky Number Slevin turns seven in Japan

The excellent Paul McGuigan movie Lucky Number Slevin opened in Japan last weekend but it came with a bit of a surprise in the shape of an odd name change.

Instead of the Josh Hartnett character’s name featuring in the title, the digit “7” is used instead with the word “seven” written nearby for clarity.

According to IMDB, the US poster used a common typographical device to render the title “Lucky Number S7evin” and the Australian title was “The Wrong Man,” but this change seems a bit pointless, no?

Sure, I know name changes for the sake of understanding are common and often essential, but can anyone shed some light on this one?

Incidentally, Charlotte’s Web is currently on release here under the (Japanese-language) title “Charlotte’s Gift” — a few prospective viewers I spoke to assumed Charlotte was the annoying Dakota Fanning character, rather than the spider beloved by kids the world over.
