Mythical beasts get their fake on for the masses

Since we’re on a cultural/freaky tip, it’s probably a good time to mention Tokyo’s other hot-ticket fall show — an exhibition of fake, yet really really important, monsters running at the National Science Museum in Ueno from October 17 to November 12.

The show is taking place at such an august venue because, for some bizarre reason, the Japanese tend to take their mythical creatures very seriously. The Kappa — a saucer-headed water sprite — for instance, is a beast many people genuinely believe in.

Aside from the Kappa, the exhibition will also feature x-rays of a Japanese Tengu devil and a bona-fide wood-and-fish mermaid. They do know these things aren’t the real McCoy, don’t they?
