Old-skool droids dusted off in Tokyo
October 5th, 2006

The tail end of last month saw the opening of Japan’s biggest-ever exhibition of old-time robots here in Tokyo. Automata, as ‘bots used to be known in the 19th century, are basically wind-up figures that perform the same task repeatedly, usually to the accompaniment of cheesy music.

The musical element explains why the show is being held at the Small Music Box Museum in Mejiro, Tokyo, incidentally.

If you want to see Asimo et al’s illustrious predecessors, including Leopold Lambert’s famous Smoking Turk, then get yourself a ticket to Nippon before the event closes on November 18.
