Pair Movies sync across two phones to form one big screen

From today Japanese TV drama fans get a new way to sample the pabulum churned out by big media here in the form of something called ‘Pair Movies.’

The first in a series of five 90-second drama shows is available now to owners of phones on the three major networks, with the twist being that two handsets are needed to view the broadcast properly.

Viewers keen on a hefty dose of schmaltz and music from Sony Music artist Juju (really) need to pair up and hold their phones side by side to form a widescreen view of the action.

It’s also supposed to act as a split view, with the male protagonist’s POV appearing on one handset and the female’s on the other. The tricky act of synchronizing the video is achieved by getting the phones to talk to each other’s IR ports.

The technology is intriguing, but – like so much these days – content seems to come second. The companies behind the Pair Movies are advertising giant Dentsu, Sony Music and a newly formed promotional body called Mobile Art. Alas, anyone outside Japan won’t be able to enjoy the show, but don’t worry - neither did I.
