Qualcomm has introduced a chip designed to bring mobile television to consumer mobile phone handsets, the company said Friday.

Although the company named the chip the Universal Broadcast Modem (UBM), it supports three leading mobile television standards: FLO (forward link only), developed in part by Qualcomm; DVB-H (Digital Video Broadcasting-Handheld); and ISDB-T (Integrated Services Digital Broadcasting-Terrestrial).

Other systems, such as T-DMB (terrestrial digital mobile broadcasting) have gained early acceptance in markets including Germany and Korea, and were developed by Qualcomm rival Samsung.

The UBM will be compatible with the CDMA2000 (code division multiple access) and WCDMA (wideband code division multiple access) 3G mobile telephony technology, the company said. Third-generation telephony supports the transmission of multimedia content, including live television programming.
