Recording portable media player does it all on a budget

NHC’s ADY-30512 PMP may have only half a gig of memory onboard but it packs a helluva punch for just ¥29,800.

It plays back MPEG-4, PEG, MOV, AVI, ASF, DivX and WMV video files, MP3, WMA and WAV audio and JPEG, BMP, TIFF and GIF images. The 2.5in screen is 320 x 240 dots and there’s a slot for SD and MMC cards. Aside from the mic for voice recording there’s support for encoding directly from any audio or video source. The battery is rated at up to six hours for video playback and output to a TV is supported.

The body measures 86.5 x 68 x 19mm and the whole thing weighs just 120g, which is nice. Connected to a PC, the player appears as a standard mass-storage device but the bad news is that the USB connection is of the old-skool 1.1 variety. On sale from August 24.

Yoshi’s take: It’s a shame about the USB being only 1.1 but if the performance of the device is halfway decent it’s still a bargain.
