Samsung mobs to attack Japan?

Bloomberg reports that Samsung is looking to supply Vodafone with 3G cellphones next summer. Flacks from both companies have been told to keep their mouths shut, which is a bit of a giveaway.

Not sure what this means at the moment; Samsung’s phones are at least as good and sometimes more advanced than the homegrown Nipponica varieties, and they cost less too.

But Vodafone is in a poor third place behind DoCoMo and KDDI, having only just passed 2 million 3G subscribers, which is a small fraction (OK, about one-tenth) of its rivals. The move represents something of an about-face, too, as Vodafone apparently declined to sell Samsung models available elsewhere in its vast empire a while back.

Last week KDDI started rolling out Pantech’s A1405PT, and DoCoMo’s been developing stuff with Lucky Goldstar for some time. While not yet a big wave, it does seem that at least a trickle of great Korean phones is seeping into the Japanese market.
