Sayonara Kitty-chan, hello ToruCa

NTT DoCoMo revealed today that its forthcoming Osaifu-Keitai (Mobile Wallet) service that will offer e-cash and credit facilities through a FeliCa IC chip will also fill users’ phones with marketing junk masquerading as useful information.

The additional service is to be called ToruCa (pronounced Toh-ru-ka not Toe-ru-ka, DoCoMo — you should know better than to pander to foreign mispronunciations, as you have done in your press release) and will fly through the air from POS terminals equipped to handle FeliCa transactions to suitable handsets. The world of information thereby provided is set to include extra product information, coupons and links to relevant i-mode sites.

ToruCa follows hard on the heels of the recent announcement that JR East and DoCoMo are in talks to work out interoperability for their respective Felica-based services, the former having a huge user base thanks to its monstrously successful IC card train passes.
