So that’s how Japan keeps its trains on time

The Yamanote Line is a train line that encircles central Tokyo and which, as you may have surmised, is extremely busy at all times.

To keep passengers from throwing themselves under the wheels of speeding trains as they pass through stations, many of the platforms feature full-length mirrors hung on opposing walls, reflecting an image of the would-be suicide. The idea, of course, is to remind folk of their own mortality and, perhaps, why they shouldn’t end it all, but that’s another story.

This story is about JR East’s Yamanote Line alarm clock, which plays many of the varying melodies the stations on the line use as their signature tune before closing doors, making announcements and scraping up body parts. We made that last one up (they bring in an oompah band for that). Make it yours for ¥7,980.
