TGS: Tokyo Game Show sees jump in first-day visitors

The numbers of visitors to the first day of this year’s Tokyo Game Show was well up on last year’s first day, organizers said Saturday.

The show attracted 39,645 people on its first day, which is reserved for media and game industry attendees. That represents a jump of 10 percent on last year’s total of 36,068 visitors, according to figures from the Computer Entertainment Supplier’s Association (CESA).

Much of the buzz on the opening day was about the PlayStation 3. The show is giving most gamers their first chance to try out the console, which boasts high-definition graphics and processing power unlike anything seen in a console to-date.

Also in the spotlight is Nintendo’s Wii console. The Wii will launch in November in the U.S. and December in Japan and has been tipped to do well against the PlayStation 3. Despite its lower power the console has an innovative wireless controller with motion sensing ability that provides gamers with a new way to interact with the virtual world on-screen.

In total last year’s show attracted 176,056 visitors and organizers have set a target of 160,000 for this year. If Friday’s opening day is any indication that target looks like it will be easily met.
