That’s *Mr* Eneloop to you
November 4th, 2005

Good ole Sanyo — saving the Earth again. This time, it’s through a new kind of rechargeable nickel metal hydride (NiMH) battery that can be supplied pre-filled with juice and ready to go. The brilliantly named Eneloop is intended to replace the throwaway alkaline and manganese batteries commonly (ab)used today.

Given that some 70,000 tons of batteries are dumped in Japan every year, the Eneloop is a Good Thing in our eyes. The new cell can be supplied with a charge onboard because it loses its energy slowly when lying idle — only 15% is lost over a year, according to Sanyo. The result is likely to be consumer goods that can be used out of the box without that annoying battery-charging hiatus.
