Since 1999, the only thing busier than Tokyo’s love hotels during the holiday season has been a 400-meter strip of illuminated pavement near the Imperial Palace. That’s where Italian artist Valerio Festi has festooned about a gazillion lights each year to create the weeklong spectacle known as Tokyo Millenario. Well, for the next few New Years, the event’s 2 million visitors will have to find new places to cram themselves, as Millenario is going dark.
Ironically, the culprit is a massive redevelopment project that’s being undertaken in the surrounding Marunouchi business district, which is part of an effort to lure more leisure-time visitors to the area. Construction should be completed in 2011, and starry-eyed Tokyoites will again be able to see the light.
