Tokyo robot invasion: fears true
November 30th, 2005

The 2005 International Robot Exhibition, being billed by sponsors as one of the world’s largest ‘bot expos, opens today at the Tokyo International Exhibition Center (Tokyo Big Sight), which, incidentally, is built on a huge mound of garbage in Tokyo Bay.

The event, held biannually, is set to showcase robots from 152 companies and 40 organizations and the main theme this time round, according to organizers, is, “Robot Technology Pioneers the Future — From Manufacturing to Personal Life.” It’s being held in conjunction with the 36th International Symposium on Robots (Nov. 29- Dec. 1) in Tokyo, confirming this city as the world’s Mecca for mechanical humans.

The news comes just after the ever-inventive Tmsuk promised to sweep us off our feet, announcing its RIDC-01 household cleaning robot (photo above). The cleanup critter comes with a voice recognition function and, bafflingly, the ‘bot also doubles as a home theater center with its projector.

Let’s hope there aren’t too many castoffs from the 2005 Aichi World Expo and there’s something left up the sleeves of Sony, Hitachi, Fujitsu, NEC and the rest for visitors.
