Tokyo subway gets DVD rental machines

Japan prides itself on being a “convenience” society, which is usually taken to mean that the locals can buy any number of items from vending machines, including soiled schoolgirl panties. Well, for traditionalists who don’t watch movies on their PSPs while commuting to the office, Tokyo Metro will start offering 10 DVD vending machines with up to 330 titles each.

The machines, made by a company with the intriguing name of Astala Vista (without the “Baby”), will dispense all the latest Hollywood and Japanese drivel 24 hours a day for ¥350. Of course, you’re going to have to register and pay by credit card, so let’s hope little Yousuke or Kimiko hasn’t stuck a bit of gum in the slot before you.

The machines will be installed in 10 heavily trafficked stations: Omotesando, Otemachi, Roppongi, Tameike Sanno, Azabu Juban, Ueno, Nihonbashi, Yotsuya, Shinjuku and Hibiya. We wonder why they didn’t bother with Ikebukuro; it’s such a dump they probably didn’t want to sully one of their machines.

Yoshi’s take: I wonder why the service is going to be available 24 hrs. a day when the subway closes around midnight!
