Toshiba camphones at 3 megapixels

Looks like the ever-increasing upward spiral of spec-measuring digits is set to carry on unabated next year now that Toshiba has got a handle on producing 3.2 megapixel CMOS image sensors for cameraphones.

The new ET8E99-AS chip ratchets up the pixel count by reducing pixel pitch from 3.75 to 2.7 microns. The company claims the new unit provides,

pixel size sufficient to record detailed, high-resolution images [with] low power consumption, smearless imaging and high-speed operation.

We’ll all get the chance to call them on that if necessary, as production is set to start in earnest at the end of this year.
