Toshiba SD cards crank it up to 11 (ok, to 6)

You may have missed it but in May the SD Card Association (they’re really fun guys) announced required minimum data transfer rates for SD cards to be given the new Class 2, 4 or 6 labels. Straightforwardly, Class 2 cards need to be able to push binary at 2MB per second, Class 4 at 4MB and Class 6 at 6MB. Accordingly, Toshiba has just launched the first ever Class 6 super cards, as well as a range of Class 4 cards.

To muddy the water a little further, the company is calling Class 4 its “high-speed series”, while Class 6 gets an “ultra” stuck on the front of that. Even more confusingly, the transfer rate for the former is actually claimed to be 5MB per second, while the ultras really push 20MB. Got all that?

The new cards will be available in 512MB, 1GB and 2GB varieties, with the faster ones obviously costing a premium, although pricing has yet to be fixed. Expect to hear more nearer the Japan launch in October and the global launch in November.
