Very handy new Xacti from Sanyo
July 22nd, 2006

HD storage is the name of the game with Sanyo’s DMX-HD1A Xacti video camera, which expects you to stuff its maw with SDHC/4GB.

The DMX-HD1A gives you a ton of modes, topping out at 30fps HD-SHQ (1,280 x 720) using a 9Mbps bit rate, all the way down to Web-HQ at 320 x 240 dots. But with the 4GB capacity, you’re still looking at almost an hour of MPEG-4 recording.

We like the Xacti design, which is vaguely retro but really comfortable to use. The picture doesn’t do this smashing little camera justice; you have to remember that these things are really on the tiny side of compact at 80 x 36 x 119mm, and extremely unheavy at 235g. They’re not too expensive, either—expect to pay around ¥90,000 when they appear in shops here at the end of September

Yoshi’s take: This vidcam’s a beaut. Sanyo’s really gung-ho about their Xactis, and they should be. If only the company had a knack for generating breathless media attention, a la Sony, we might see more people sporting them at our local obon matsuri.
