Today marks the end of an era: Sony announced that by the end of March it will end domestic output of its Walkman portable audio players. The move comes as part of a restructuring plan announced last September by the company’s non-Japanese boss, Sir Howard Stringer.
We remember Sir Howard saying at one of his big press conferences in Tokyo last summer that, no matter what the press thought, he didn’t have a hatchet in his back pocket. Well, it turned out to be a chainsaw.
All remaining production of tape, MD, CD and Network Walkman models will be moved to Malaysia and China, according to Sony PR man Atsuo Omagari, who said that tape-based Walkmans are still a strong sellers in Malaysia, for example.
