By the side of Tokyo Bay, just south of DWT central, red velvet curtains are being drawn aside to unveil the biggest event of the year for trading card gamers as Magic: The Gathering 2005 World Championships opens at Pacifico Yokohama today (Wednesday).

The five-day elf and goblin fest involves Wizards of the Coast of the U.S., who, having escaped from their dungeons on the other side of the Pacific, are sponsoring the event, and Takara, which sells the playing cards in Japan.

It’s not just for kids, mind. The showdown is being billed as the “pinnacle” of the professional trading card circuit and features 300+ finalists from 66 countries flexing their cards and skills for prize money totaling ¥35 million.

This is the first time the event has been held in Tokyo since 1999 and excitement is no doubt reaching a frenzy as we write. BTW, Japan’s top pro player dealt himself ¥12 million in prize money last year. Wonder what his day job was…
