A local staffing service company called People Staff will start using Business Design Laboratory’s Yorisoi (snuggly) ifbot and vomit-inducingly cute Hello Kitty robots to work in old people’s homes and offices starting in February.
The ifbot is a communications robot that has some ability to respond to words and ask questions, which it does well enough (supposedly) to help slow senility by engaging the fading minds of the aged.
This news follows the announcement of a very limited introduction of Fujitsu’s enon service bot in some Tokyo-area shops. But shoving skepticism aside for a minute, it does begin to look as if we are seeing the pre-dawn of the age of semi-useful service robots.
