To be honest, we aren’t at all sure what these pictures from Sharp are supposed to mean. The company says it’s developed a CMOS sensor with a range-distance function integrated into the chip, which is, apparently, something of a world first.

While some have been going nuts over another company’s dull-as-ditchwater camera blitz, we thought we’d tell you that Casio is updating its EXILIM lineup with the EX-Z60, which will be on sale on Apr. 14.

Matsushita and Olympus have teamed up to produce Panasonic’s first D-SLR, the Lumix DMC-L1.

Samsung has strengthened its DSC lineup with two new versions of its Digimax brand, the L60 and L85, as well as the 6-megapixel GX-1L, which is the (rapid!) successor to the company’s first-ever digital SLR, announced all of five weeks ago.

This morning saw the day legions of nerdy photographers across the globe have been waiting for when Canon released details of the EOS 30D D-SLR, an upgrade to the 20D from September 2004. If you wanna skip the techno babble below and go to the link at the bottom for a hefty helping of cam pr0n, be our guest, but the question remains was it worth the wait?

Casio’s newest Exilim compact consumer digicam, the EX-Z850, springs no surprises, pleasant or otherwise, in that it comes with a 3x optical zoom and a slightly-better-than-its-predecessor 8.1-megapixel CCD.

Panasonic had a busy day today, during which it announced a bunch of new consumer cameras and photo printers.

Sony has just added two new Cyber-shots to its digicam lineup, the DSC-W30 and DSC-W50. There’s nothing majorly exciting about either of them, so we’ll keep it brief.

Olympus has been busy recently and has just revealed a totally revamped pocket digicam range. There’s a little something of everything (except of course a D-SLR) in the new lineup, which starts with the entry-level Camedia FE-150 and tops out with an 8-megapixel model. All the cams have large 2.5in screens.

Axes Quin is a Japanese company so small it doesn’t even have a website (it hosts its PR library on Geocities) but it sure has a cool-looking (warm-looking?) product in the 2-way Fingerless Mitten Gloves.

The unusually styled Olympus e330 D-SLR comes with a 7.5-megapixel resolution courtesy of a Four Thirds nMOS sensor but is noteworthy in that there’s a second CCD feeding a live preview to an adjustable 2.5in monitor for picture framing and viewing, just like on a point-and-click DSC. The idea, of course, is to encourage folk with consumer-level digicams to trade up to D-SLR.

So near, and yet so far. At a distance, Panasonic’s new DMC-FZ7 looks like it’s almost a D-SLR. For around ¥50,000, you’re going to get a 6-megapixel sensor, a 12x zoom, 1600 ISO and a 2.5in screen. The 112.5mm x 79mm x 72.2mm DMC-FZ7 weighs 357g and will be in shops on Feb. 17.

As expected, Sony is due to hit the D-SLR market pretty soon. One of the company’s top executives revealed on Friday that it is aiming to snare a fifth of the market before long.

The good people at Samsung’s PR office just sent over a few more photos of the new digital SLR we mentioned earlier this week and they’re so lovely we thought we’d share.

Samsung’s long-rumored digital SLR is official at last and it ain’t half bad.

Fujifilm has obviously decided to go gangbusters at CES, announcing the imminent release of four new FinePix models.

Samsung is showing off a host of great cameras at CES, including this Digimax i6, a 6-megapixel DSC/PMP that plays movies via Samsung’s Digimax Converter software) and MP3s.

As DSCs continue to advance, camera makers are looking for ways to get DSLR features into the most basic point-and-clickers.

Victor JVC helps bring matters into clearer focus with its new GR-D350 camcorder, which boasts a 32x optical zoom.

Our friends at Camera Labs have put four compact digicams through their paces so you don’t have to. Squaring off in a battle of mighty minis are the Canon PowerShot A620, Fujifilm FinePix F11, Pentax Optio S6 and Sony Cyber-shot DSC-N1. The editors considered sturdiness, image quality, bang for the buck and a boatload of other criteria.

Poor old Sony — now, even the Chinese have it in for you; what’s a down-at-heel entertainment and electronics multinational to do, eh?

Camera Labs has just posted a review of Sony’s 10.8-megapixel all-in-one camera, the Cyber-shot DSC-R1, giving it a pretty good 83% rating. Of particular interest is the explanation of just why the R1 is worth considering instead of a cheaper digital SLR.

Digicam otaku in the market for a new camera (or just a good, geeky read) might want to check out a new specialist site launched this week by a bunch of our pals from various publications, including MacUser and the like.

Sony has its beady eyes on us and has just launched its all-in-one PCS-TL30 video conferencing system, which comes with a 1.3 megapixel video camera, microphone, stereo speakers and a 17in XGA LCD monitor thrown in.

It seems nothing is sacred – now those dirty yak guys are using Akihabara’s finest goodies to pinch our ATM PINs. A recent spate of reports of mini spy cameras being sneak-mounted on bank ATMs here in Japan shows just how high-tech they’re getting.

It seems that Sony realized that its last slim consumer digicam, the DSC-T7, was less than rock solid and so has decided to iron out that l’il kink in an otherwise peachy cam by adding something called Super Steady Shot to the Cyber-shot DSC-T9 mix.

Looks like Canon is aiming its viewfinder at fuel cells. It plans to start decking out at least some of its cameras and other gadgets with fuel cells, but not for about three years.

Fujifilm has released details of its latest FinePix series. The Z2 sounds like a sports car and comes with a nice big 5.12 megapixel sensor.

Ploughing ahead with new cams at breakneck speed, Sanyo has released its latest Xacti tapeless digital video cameras, the Xacti C6 and C40, with &#151 as you would expect &#151 a lot of “handy” features.

Also at KES, Samsung finally unveiled its smooth-looking new PMP, the YM-PD1, and we were allowed a quick twiddle with it.

Looks like the ever-increasing upward spiral of spec-measuring digits is set to carry on unabated next year now that Toshiba has got a handle on producing 3.2 megapixel CMOS image sensors for cameraphones.
