Come the end of next month, one of the last refuges of escape from the digital onslaught of the modern world will be cruelly ripped from us, when Panasonic’s new, fully connected car navigation system goes on sale.

Flat-panel displays are so mainstream these days they have an entire massive exhibition dedicated to them – the Display Expo in Tokyo. That’s where the technologies we’re likely to see in the shops over the next few years get an early airing, and we were there last month.

If you’re in Japan, a Wii fan and have ¥69,800 ($675) to spare, you might want to bung it towards the chuckle brothers who run Thanko, that great purveyor of all things ridiculous.

Sony Japan has been busy of late on the Walkman front, so it’s no surprise to see yet another new lineup announced in Japan this morning - the 1-seg digital TV toting, credit-card sized NW-A910 series.

If there’s a product as bizarre as the Segnity pocket television from E-Revolution then we’ve yet to see it.

If any one thing makes it clear that the end of analogue TV broadcasts really is nigh, then it’s the flood of digital tellys and tuners onto the market, especially in Japan. These days, everything from phones to car sat-nav systems now arrives speaking digital fluently.

Since April Fool’s Day this year most of Japan has been able to enjoy digital TV broadcasts created specifically for mobile devices, particularly for cellphones. The new service has been branded “1-seg” for a very good reason.
